Developmental List of Executive functioning skills

Kindergarten-Grade 2
Run errands (two or three step directions)
Tidy bedroom or playroom
Perform simple chores and self-help tasks with reminders
Bring papers to and from school
Decide how to spend money
Inhibit behaviors: follow safety rules, raise hand before speaking, keep hands to self
Complete homework assignments (20 minute maximum)
Grades 3-5
Keep track of belongings when away from home
Perform chores that take 15-30 minutes
Bring books, papers, assignments to and from school
Complete homework (1 hour max)
Tidy bedroom, vacuuming, dusting, etc.
Keep track of changing daily schedule
Save money for desired objects, plan how to earn money
Plan simple school project such as books reports (select book, read book, write report)
Inhibit/self-regulate:behave when teacher is out of the classroom, refrain from rude comments, temper tantrums, bad manners.
Strategies for parents at home:
Help your child get organized
Promote self care (eat healthy, exercise, relax)
Regularly review homework and ask to see completed assignments after grading
Tap into your child’s strengths
Use a collaborative problem-solving approach
Use checklists for a variety of tasks
Take pictures of your child completing the tasks or what the finished product should look like
Use video modeling
