Tips for teachers who have anxious/stressed students in their classes!
Implement anxiety-reducing breaks throughout the day (start with two a day for 10 minutes each).
The breaks are not earned or withheld.
Present only a few items to do at a time for a student.
“Calming box”-contains small items that the student may use when they are stressed.
Teachers you can keep this and control when it is used.
Emotional Thermometer or another visual support to help identify students feelings.
Seat the child near positive peer models who are not
disruptive
when
possible
.
Class participation =signal for when their turn may be coming, practice ahead of time, call on them if their hand is raised or if they are confident.
Class presentations-have child practice ahead of time, video themselves, present only to the teacher, etc.
Tips for children who have difficulty attending to task:
Provide a short exercise period after a long work session.
Make lessons short and to the point.
Organizational tip: Provide due dates of assignments each day, help students development a system to keep track of their work.
Create a "private office" for your student.
Seat student next to appropriate role models.
